Otherwise the roofs could pose a hazard to those living in the house. Patching up holes and cracked wood before appropriately covering the roof securely with shingle tiles is one example of this.
Materials used for roofing and shingles vary, but everything used is sturdy and safe architecturally and health-wise. Shingles are tacked or nailed on securely. But only where the shingle tile meets the roof; shingle tiles are never tacked or nailed at the overlap. Such a procedure would be deemed less secure (as it is more difficult to nail through multiple asphalt shingle tiles), and the appearance looks awkward. For ceramic (and occasionally with the asphalt), a heavy-bonding tar or paste is sometimes used to attach the roofing tiles. The shingle tiles are laid in a row along the bottom edge of the roof. Each ascending row, as said, overlaps the one beneath it by about half a length of the tile.
Roofing slates, also call “slate shingles,” are also used in roofing and shingles, and are applied the same way. Because of the heavy consistency of slate, it’s unlikely that nails or tacks are used. Instead, many roofers find pasting or tarring seems the better choice for a bonding method.

Because the life expectancy of your roof depends on several factors; type of roofing, quality of material, and exposure to harsh weather elements among the top. With regular maintenance and normal weathering factors, a roof can last anywhere from 10 – 100 years.
Common roofing material such as built up roofing usually lasts 12 – 20 years, metal roofing 15 – 40 years, wood shake or shingles 10 – 40 years, asphalt shingles 15 – 30 years, and specialty material like slate up to 100 years under good conditions.
Leaks start as small cracks in roofing material that may not be visible; water may collect in an adjacent area. To detect such damage, a close inspection of the roof may be necessary.
Personal injury to the homeowner caused by trying to inspect it his or her self will be avoided. A roof inspection should be performed annually. Make Money Chasing Hail: How To Remove & Replace a Shingle Roof
This blog will show you how to remove and replace a shingle roof. But first you need to decide on the type of shingles you want to install on your roofing project.
When determining the amount of materials needed:
A square is defined by a 10 foot by 10-foot area and it takes 3 bundles of shingles per square for each square for 3-tab roofs.
There are 3-tab shingles, architectural and wood shake shingle roofs. Follow the same tips for removing all shingles.
Removing The Old Shingles
There are several tools you can use for removing the old shingles. If you are removing shingles from a roof that has multiple layers of shingles on it you may want to purchase a pitchfork. Pitchforks come in handy and are very useful for removing multiples layers of shingles due to there being a lot more nails from the additional layers of shingles. You can buy them at your local hardware stores, Lowes or Home depot. However, using pitchforks leave a lot of nails sticking up that you will have to deal with later.
There are other tools you can use for removing the old shingles like flat spades and there’s even one called a shingle eater. Shingle eaters work very well when removing shingles from roofs that only have 1 to 2 layers of shingle installed on them. Shingle eaters work well because the bottom edge is not smooth. There are v cutouts on the bottom edge approximately 1 inch apart. Allowing you to easily pop stubborn shingles off .

Make Money Chasing Hail: Here’s a guide you can follow If you are installing a 3-tab shingle roof:
You will need a tape measure preferably a 25-foot tape measure. A chalk line to mark the roof off to keep the shingle straight, and a metal cutter such as tin snips or metal masters for installing the drip edge.
You need to sweep the roof off to ensure that there won’t be anything that will create a lump or bulge. This ensures a clean smooth surface when installing the new shingles.
Once you’ve completed the above steps and you’re ready to install the roof you will start by installing the drip edge.
Installing Drip Edge
The proper way to install drip edge is to install it on the entire perimeter of the roof. You can then install the roofing felt.
Installing Felt Underlayment
Felt comes in 15- or 30-pound rolls. You can use 15lb felt on roofs that are 4/12 pitches or greater unless it’s a mansard or low pitch roof then you would want to use 30lb felt or ice and water shield on low pitch roofs.
Roll out the roofing felt horizontally across the bottoms leaving about 1/4th space of the drip edge exposed.
There are different types of fasteners you can use for installing roofing felt. My preference is 1-inch plastic caps but you can also use a stapler.
I would only use a stapler on a roof that is 4/12 pitch or less because when it’s hot outside walking on the felt is not as secure as it would be using plastic caps.
Marking the Roof For Shingle Installation
After installing the felt underlayment, measure 11 inches from the bottom on both ends of the roof slope and, pop a horizontal chalk line all the way across from end to end.
Then you need to place an upside-down shingle all the way across the bottom of the roof and place the first roll of shingles right side up, starting with a 30 inch shingle.
Then, measure 5 inches from the top of the shingle that you just installed on both ends of the roof slope. From the 5-inch line repeat the process every 5 inches until you reach the ridge.
Marking Vertical Caulk Lines
Then, pop another chalk line vertically 11 inches on both ends of the roof slope and nail a shingle with the water grooves facing inside the roof to create a smooth 1-inch edge everywhere there will be an overhang. When you complete this process, you should have a 1-inch overhang all the way around the perimeter, repeat these steps for each roof slope.
After you’ve completed these steps you need to pop 2 more vertical lines from the roof’s edges. You need to measure 29 and 35 inches from the outside edge of the drip edge. Then at the top and the bottom of the roof slope for gable roofs.
This is important in giving a perfectly straight beautiful looking roof. However, if you are going to be roofing a hip roof you have to measure and install hip roofs differently. You have to mark off hip roofs by measuring half way across the bottom of the triangle and mark 3- 4-5 or 6-8-10 feet then pop 2 vertical chalk line up and down 6 inches apart to make hip roof straight.
